found this yesterday while digging around a house that was built in the 1700's.
it is a brass piece.
the hole in the bottom shows that it was broken off of something???

It might be what is called a "ball button" which is missing its back. Brass 2-piece ball buttons were widely popular in the mid-1800s... and a few are still being made and worn today, notably on women's coats and some military school uniforms (such as the Virginia Military Institute cadet uniforms). I said "might" because I haven't seen a ball button with a design on it like we see in your photo. But I do not believe I've seen every variation of buttons. :)

never thought of it being a button. but that is possible.
here is a pic of the back. there is a big piece missing.
a second layer can be seen. it almost looks like it would swivel??

I've found a few from the Zouave Brooklyn Regiment. No design.

That looks layered...but as Cannonball Guy said, it's definitely a ball button.
