Well we tried. Looks like a clover. But we cant read the backmark with the picture you provided. The flash or light reflection may be the problem. Can you read any of it in person?
BTW if you take another photo outside, turn off the flash. That may be the problem. The dark background is fine.
I agree with my good friend Creskol... looks like a Golden Age button with a leaf motif -- but we need to know the backmark to be sure of its time-period. The emblem on the button looks to me like a fig leaf. Here's a photo of one, from Wikipedia.
Barryh, thank you for the partial reading of your button's backmark. Rather than HILLSBORO RAND CO, my guess is that it says "D. EVANS & CO / ATTLEBORO" (in Massachusets). Does it have "MA" or "MASS" or "MS" somewhere in the backmark? That company manufactured buttons with that backmark (no MA or MS or MASS) from 1848 to about 1880.
Thanks for the update. still hard to make out but I can see where it may say D. Evans & CO / Attleboro. I don't see a MA, MS or MASS. Thanks again Pete. Hope your doing well. Haven't seen you in ages. Kathy say's hello.
