stupid, right?

I found 8 stamps decently preserved for about 100 years by a Gillette razor box!

The stamps were printed between 1913-15 and commemorate the completion of the Panama Canal and the PPIE in 1915.

I guess you never know what you're going to turn up out there.

Very unique find. You might have mentioned it but did you dig this razor container out of the ground while metal detecting or find it in an protected interior location. Either way it is a great find but if this was a dug find then I am amazed that the box preserved the stamps like it did.

Hey Screwynewey, they were dug, indeed! Gillette, I guess, made some pretty darn strong boxes back then.

I was kind of thinking the same thing and was going to mention it but in the title it says dug. Which brings me also to another point which makes a good Banner find is the story of the recovery and a willingness to participate in the thread answer questions excetera

I will include more details below, but yeah they were dug.

Hi; Then I DEFINITELY Vote for BANNER. Great find. PEACE:RONB :icon_thumright:

Hey all, I really didn't expect a banner consideration for this find, but I definitely appreciated it. To answer the question about whether they were detected/dug, yes they were. It was really the only decent find on a day made worse by the fact that I had earlier kicked over a wasps nest and had 5 or 6 stinging bumps on my body and face for the rest of the day to prove it!

It was toward the end of the day and I was thinking the day was pretty much over. My detecting buddy, however, more determined than I was, called me over to an area we had not hit yet. He had just pulled some old indicators such as a lantern base and a few square nails so I thought I'd give it a go. I settled in on a little flat spot on the top of a hill beneath two large oak trees and turned my detector on. I was using my AT Pro that day. In the area about 30' x 30' this was the only repeating hit and it was only a couple of inches down. I was shocked when I opened the case to reveal the stamps in fairly decent condition and ran over to my friend to show off the find. He was equally shocked and awed that these could have survived so long in the ground. But they did! The case itself does snap together pretty snuggly which obviously helped, but I think the fact that it was up on a hill in a very temperate area and protected by an oak canopy were all important elements in their preservation.

thanks!

Hi GREG407; That find is definitely BANNER worthy due to the Uniqueness of the find itself. I've been hunting for 48 years now and I have NEVER heard of such a strange find. CONGRATS. I did Vote BANNER. My Vote is in ok. PEACE:RONB :leprechaun-hat:

Too bad, no upside down airplanes!

That's really cool! You never know what will turn up with this hobby, congrats and HH
