Well of all the pottery from the site which was alot that's the only triangular free standing flat bottomed five sided piece of the bunch.
I'll just call it that.
I don't think pottery would just plop into that shape.
I don't see tool marks but it appears pressed.
Gator, you have the piece in hand, so you know more than I do. It looks like part of a hand made brick to me. The shape, I'm clueless. Are you sure it's native made?
I tend to agree with several of the others. It looks to be either part of a brick or some modern made, fired clay pieces.
The best way to tell is look at the tempering material. Compare with other pieces of pottery from the site. I would suspect that the tempering material would be quite different from that piece and the other pottery.
Just staring at that little pyramid/cone thingy and wondering what in the world it really looked like. Kinda looks like a piece of a toy block set, but that doesn't make sense at all. Has there ever been a clay gaming piece- like a die (one of a pair of dice)--anything shaped like that?-- is anything scored on any of the facets? Anywhere anything could have been attached? Reminds me of a lead sinker shape too... Easier to mold than carve That piece is definately perplexing. BTW, please don't leave the site. I've learned too much from you. Yak
