I got this at a neighbor's house on my road; 18th century site. I found it at 6+ inches, the only marking is a small anchor stamped on the back. it has a nice patina on it; I didn't clean it at all, just knocked the dirt off it. I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but the post section is stepped back, like the belt or strap is meant to be flush with the buckle. any help would be appreciated. buckle2.GIF

sorry, didn't think of that. 1 7/8" long, 1 3/8" wide.

thanks for the link, crusader. wow, that's a lot of arguing over a buckle! I'm not too sure of your assessment though. granted, the anchor mark in your pictures is the same as the one on this item. but I have found harness parts on that property, and it was all iron, very rotten, and relatively shallow, 3 to 4 inches usually. the depth that it was found at is another issue; I can't see it getting that far into the ground in that time frame. also, the interior width of the buckle is only 5/8", the strap couldn't have been wider than 1/2". I'm no expert on harnesses, but I don't think it would have been strong enough for that use. I thought it might have been off of a boot, just a guess on my part. I do thank you for your input on this.

I part own two horses & they still use similar buckles today.
I have found 1950s coins at 6inches. I have no idea how they get so deep in the timeframe.

I agree with Crusader on this one.

(1.) Depth and (2.) Association are two traps into which detectorists can fall.

The thinking goes: "I found this at 8 inches and the IH's I found were at 4 inches, so this must be older" and "I found this at a CW campsite, and didn't find any modern junk there, so this must be a CW relic too."

A lot depends on the relic itself. This style of buckle I just don't think is that old.

Best Wishes,

alright then. I see the logic in both of your posts; I guess I'll defer to those more versed.
