I'll chime-in with ropesfish: Looks like a quartz geode. I've seen a couple around the McKinnie region of Virginia, too!

Due to the dullness of the crystals inside, I believe that it is a Calcite Geode.

Frank

Frank got it right. My buddy collected (literally) tons of it from Tampa Bay.

Was visiting a Rock & Mineral Shop several miles away which exhibited several geodes about 6 feet high and maybe 3 feet wide...filled with purple amethyst crystals...absolutely stunning...

In fact, they have several thousands of baseball size geodes which they will cut in half...its always a suprise what they find inside...sometimes crystals of different colors and others are solid.

Geodes come in all sizes, shapes and colors...

I've a part of a large amethyst geode with large (3") crystals and a nice deep color. The whole thing weighs about 25#. Anyone have any idea of its value?

Old man,
First, I wish you a fast recovery from your recent surgery. Since you are also interested in the "1605", I can tell you we found similar material buried deeply on Swan Is. while searching for the "1605" and other goodies; turned out to be calcite.
Don..

Don and everyone else, thanks for the replies. I knew that the experts would come through. That's why this is such a great forum. Don Thanks for the Best wishes. The First 3 days were the hard part. I feel better now then I have in years. Those triple bypasses aren't that bad. The hard part was the hospital food for 10 days.
Good Luck to all this year.
