They get more likely as you go down the list 1+2 no, 3 the right idea and maybe, 4 I’m not familiar with quartz flakes myself, 5 looks pretty good I’d probably keep it as a flake maybe a scraper can’t tell from one pic

Which begs the question.

If found in a driveway, likely not.

If found on a habitation site, more than likely intentional.

I'd say, regretfully, that they are nothing more than geofacts. Don't give up though. True artifacts have obvious signs of human modification. You have to develop "The Eye" for it by examining many hundreds and thousands of specimens of known artifacts. It's a cultivated talent. MHO

I think local geology plays a big role too, I’m in a big basin of limestone sandstone and shale, flint other than local chert automatically makes it highly likely it’s native... other areas I imagine rocks like yours are a dime a dozen

Thanks to everyone for your reply’s. It really is helping me learn what to look for. I am adding a few more pic’s, but it looks like I have to start a new thread. I would again value your opinions. Thanks

Ive picked up a few rocks with those interesting little holes, never was convinced they were native but the fact you picked one up too makes me wonder

i have a bucket full of stones with holes...in my case they are accumulations that formed around something else, sometimes a crystal and that original "thing" eroded out. A lot of my holes are hexagonal too, some are square others round.

My house is built on the old hohokam canal system. I have found several burned rocks in my yard, along with a stones with holes just like the small stone.

Unless there is evidence of drilling (biconical drilling and/or reed drilling w/sand), they are not man made. They are likely concretions that formed around a root or other softer material that eroded away leaving a hole. I've found quite a few in the pea gravel in my driveway.

With the amount of “artifactish” rocks you all can find in your driveways, I’m pricing out ripping out my pavement

Kiwi419, The 3rd and 5th do indeed mimic the shape of artifacts (scrapers, utilized flake, or perhaps merely debitage), but the material looks like gravel and not chert. The rock has a texture to it, and chert is smooth as glass in between the fractures/ridges. It's so smooth that dirt will not stick to it, rain washes them clean, and the artifacts will even have a slight gleam to them in the field. I am always seeing gravel - everywhere - that has the right shape for artifacts, not sure of what kind of rock it is, but it just fractures that way. I think you are getting a good eye for shape, now if you could find a known NA site, you'd be all ready to do some good hunting and gathering!
