Hope some can give me advice on a trip.
Sometime this early summer I hope to go to Arlington where my folks will be placed to rest.
Perhaps in May.
It takes some time to get arrangements done and I have no say in the matter.
Alas, I may not be able to bring my MD as time will be short.
I see on the map that DCA (Reagan) is the closest airport.
Will rent a car and stay maybe 2 nights somewhere, the night I arrive and a day for funeral and leave next day. Do not want to land in a place like that at 2 A.M. and try to find a hotel.
I am coming from west coast, Oregon, and have no idea what to expect.
Sure wish I could see the Atlantic Ocean but am not sure of driving times/toll roads/ etc.
My Dad was in WWII in the "Army Aircorps" which became the US Airforce.
Also did some stuff during Korean war. Did not like to talk about it.
Anyway, retired from service (a lot later from the reserves after 19 yrs.) as a Major.
We had to move because of poor times so he did not get 20 yr. retirement pay. Also add on 13 yrs. US Post office, but they did not count. He deserves Arlington. And so does Mom.
Any advice for this trip?

Thanks Packer,
Map would not load.
I have no need or want to go to DC.
I have a CHL from Oregon that is not recognized by any other state.
Guess I should get a Utah one.

Would like to see the Atlantic though. Hear they have waves like the 3' Tsunami in Hawaii.
Hoping for suggestions on easiest roads to go and time involved.
Also places to avoid like DC.

A friend went to Connecticut and they do not sell beer/wine or anything on Sundays.
Can I smoke a cigarette in my car? Do I have to turn on headlights when driving?
This kind of info would help.
When I went to Hawaii and California you had to pump your own gas.
No problem for me as I worked as a gas jocky through high school.
But it is illegal to do that in Oregon. One of the few states. I have no idea why.
Are there any weird laws like that in the eastern states?

Hey Grey,

One of the things you need to considde when you travel into "the zone"
It is all patrolled by the park police. USFS.
These are the federal park Police. U. S. Forest Service.
They answer to a different set of laws.

Be VERY careful my friend.
leave the MD behind.
Trust me. Check out the regs when you get there.
You won't be sorry tou listened to me.

Thanks Thom,
This the kind of info I need.
Stranger in a strange land.
Not sure what "The Zone" is, maybe the beach areas?
Do they have beaches on the Potomic or is it Chesapeak bay area?

The parks aren't just city parks
They are national type parks and are patrolled by the park police (feds - USFS)
The zone stretches North, West and South from DC.

My brother lived in Silver Spring MD for many years. He couldn't get permission to go into the park across the road and get firewood as an aid in cleaning the park. He was told that even that would require a federal permit.

Greatest place of respect at Arlington. I have relatived buried there. Also at National cemetary. My Dad was also in AAC with the 8th. Impressive times impressive people !

Anyone near there suggest a motel for less than $300/night ?
Bed and a toilet is fine. 50 miles is near.

Check into the Annapolis MD area. it is a colonial town about 30 miles east of Arlington. Tons of hotels. Ans a very nice town. And it's where I live
