its abut 1 1/4 inches wide and about 2 inches long

It's the US Army rank/grade insignia for Staff Sergeant (SSgt) E-6. FYI you have it inverted, the point goes up!

They were pinned to the green-bean hats, the collars, and some people did attach them to their helmet covers.
