Arrowhead in vertebrae????

I saw this and figured you guys could give him a little information and opinions. Here's his story. Cool if it's real........

I was going through some of my crap today and I came across something that I forgot I had. I got this from my father when I was a kid. He tells me he found it on some property he had at the Lake of the Ozarks.

It looks like a large vertebrate with an arrow head sticking in it. There is an arrow head show near me this month. I plan on taking it to some of the people there and seeing what it's worth.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? I don't want to get scammed or low balled.

Ok the best thing to do now is go to a collage and have a paleontologists or geologists check it out.
The point would be from 7500 -5500 BC so the bone has to be that old also.
Thats a big bone, maybe came from a wooly mammoth.
Please don't toss it out or let the dog chew on it.

I agree with tmodel and mama bear, have an expert look at it... the best example of point in bone is the hunters mummified body found in Europe a few years back. Like boom said, please don't let the dog chew on it....goat

At first that looked like a Clovis or Dalton. I would def send it off to a authinticator, i would NOT take it to a college or university!!!! i have a book that had a study on on prehistoric warfare, and there were a number of examples where the point was still preserved in the bone, some even healed around the point. Thiks its called Arrowheads spears and knives or something like that.

May I ask why a college or university is not the place to take this? I thought that would be the first place to go.

If in fact you can get it authenicated by someone who can look at it "hands on" so to speak, then it could be worth a good little chunk of change. There are very few actual/ "authenicated" examples of a point being stuck in a bone, but they do exisit. I would take it to someone I trust or someone who is highly regarded in the artifact world. And I would not sell it until I was well informed about what I had. If the people at the artifact show can't help you then maybe contact a local muesem.

I would also like to humblly disagree about it being a dalton or a clovis type point. It has side notches that are not typical for either type point. Graham cave point would be closer to right in my mind. Good luck!

It sure dont look like a Clovis to me, with the notches.

I am sticking to my opinion that, if it is an old point, a newer tribe could have found a point, and reused it.

I find bone fragments where the buffalo bones were piled, and hauled off. On a farm that gets worked every year, so bones and last a while out in the open.

I wouldnt take it to a college, either. if there is a club around, start there.

The answer to your question is that a lot of colleges will want to study the piece and you run the risk of never getting it back again, I would not let that piece out of my sight....a friend took a clovis into a college anthropology dept. to have it typed, no treasurenet back then, they kept it for study and followed him to the site to see where he found it...long story short, they contacted the state and had the area closed to anyone except their archies....goat

Sorry for the late response, thank you Goat for pretty much getting it spot on, being a collector... well what you have , if real is highly prized, even tho its not thousands of years old, the point fits the timeline of the bone, start making some phone calls, cost ya 100 bucks to get it authinticated, and welll ya...

oh, and his first pics it looked like a early point, then the follow up pics the notches are very notiable, just to clear that up, i dont type everything i am thinking all the time, only half come out lol

I have seen points in bone where the bone healed around the wound and arrowhead and the human lived.

An expert will be able to tell you if the impact was in green bone or later inserted into old dried out bone. Ancients recycled everything so if real would guess they did not recover their kill. I will say for some weird reason people like to fake this type of find.

I have emailed Pics to a few Experts. While I can't seem to get an ID on the point , the consensus is that the bone is from a Bison.

Does anyone have a link to somewhere that I can take this thing to get it looked at? :help:

I would not hesitate to take it to a University to be looked at. I just would not leave it with them and would make an appointment with them knowing what you are coming in with. It is true that most Archeologist do not know typology as well as people that collect,trade and sell artifacts. They will admitt that. Where the academic expertise will come in is wether or not the point in question was actually embedded in the bone when the animal died. Assuming it is animal.
I would think the patina of the bone would be the same around the impact area as the outside of the bone and not a diffrent color. Ancient wound equals ancient patina.

That is certainly a good place to take it... There are usually two shows going on at once, and the one you have to pay 3 or 4 dollars to get in is probably where you want to spend your time vs the free one.

A lot of collectors would see that and assume bogus, so be prepared for some people to tell you that. Most will be polite about it, some might be rude... Maybe find someone who has some bone on display and see what they think, or stop by one of the bigger dealer/authenticators and see what they think.
