A buddy of mine asked me if I could ID this coin. Never seen it before. Anyone know what it is?

Thanks,
John

Whats the difference between a Won and a Yen? I believe the Yen was the currency of Korea from 1910 until 1945, but I think this Yen is Japanese. :D

The Won is the currency of South Korea. "Won" is a cognate of the Chinese yuan and Japanese yen. All three names derive from the Chinese character 圓(원), which means "round shape." The won was subdivided into 100 jeon (Hangul: 전; Hanja: 錢; RR: jeon; MR: chŏn), which means "money", which too is of Chinese origin and refers to the bronze and copper coins of old.

The 10 yen coin (十円硬貨, Jū-en kōka?) is one denomination of Japanese yen.

The obverse of the coin depicts the Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in, a Buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto prefecture, with the kanji for "Japan" and "Ten Yen." The reverse shows the numerals "10" and the date of issue in kanji surrounded by bay laurel leaves.

10-yen coins issued between 1951 and 1958 have serrated edges, while 10-yen coins issued from 1959 onward do not.

I cant read the date is in Kanji.
