I googled the hotel and its still in operation and is quite the nice hotel. Would anyone know how to find an approximate date and value of something like this.

Sure is. All I can make out is Boston.

My first guess would be...

J. C. ROBBINS, BOSTON, early 1840's - about 1890. One of the major baggage tag makers.

As a second choice...

SHERBURNE & CO. BOSTON, 1865 - early 1900's.

Are these tags valuable?

They can be, although most aren't as valuable as, say, railroad baggage tags. I've seen a few Eastern and Southern states hotel tags sell for as much as $100, and even more for those that could definitely be dated to the Civil War period. (Some of the tags from Western ghost towns can go for $500+.)

Yours is a bit rough; but then again, the hotel is a well known one with a long and interesting history. The main thing is, you've just got to find the right collector.

If it were mine, I'd keep it. It's a great relic!

I am definitely keeping it. I have never sold a find. The hotel is about 3 1/2 hours away from the homesite it was found at. Thanks again! Mike
