Hello!

A buddy of mine dug this . . . . looks like some kind of submarine badge . . . . looks legit to me, but where did it come from? Is it a real military badge?

It's about 58 mm long, and about 22 mm tall. The only markings are on the back side ~ it reads P16117. What's these numbers mean?

THANKS!
Neil

Check it out dude, dont give much to the pin..................

The Polaris missile was a two-stage solid-fuel nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) built during the Cold War by Lockheed Corporation of California for the United States Navy.

It was designed to be used as part of the Navy's contribution to the United States arsenal of nuclear weapons, replacing the Regulus cruise missile. Known as a Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM), the Polaris was first launched from the Cape Canaveral, Florida, missile test base on January 7, 1960.

Following the Polaris Sales Agreement in 1963, Polaris missiles were also carried on British Royal Navy submarines between 1968 and the mid-1990s.

Plans to equip the Italian Navy with the missile ended in the mid-60s, after several successful test launches carried out on board an Italian cruiser, as an effect of the resolution of the Cuban missile crisis.

The Polaris missile was gradually replaced in the US Navy by the Poseidon missile, beginning in 1972. During the 1980s, these missiles were replaced on the ten newest missile submarines by the Trident I missile.

I spent 4 years on USS SSBN 617 Alexander Hamilton out of Holy Loch Scotland...

There are 2 crews on these type os subs... (BM = Ballistic Missle) The two crew rotate the sub every 105 days... This is a SSBN Deterrent Patrol insignia... Small star would go in for each partol... A gold star for each parton being replaced by a silver star to signify 5 patrols...

The other metal that Bubble heads wear is called Dolphins... These are earned taking 6 months to 1 year of work underway... Time can vary depending on the type of sub you are on... fast attack submariners don't have seperate crew that rotate out... They don't do Deterrent patrols... They are more attack / hunters...
