ATVs versus Jeeps

I like the idea of any good 4x4 atv with a winch, especially where I live. The only two drawbacks I can envision to this type of transportation is HEAT and emergency shelter. None of them provide either of those things, but then how often would that really be an issue ? I know I take other precautions for those things anyway and I assume most everyone else does too if they have any idea that they might not make it back to camp or home before the next day or so.
When I get interested in something, sometimes I forget where home is for a while.

They make a tent type blind that works in conjunction with your 4X4 if you need ER shelter for some reason. It's kinda pricey, but if need be you can throw it up in mere seconds and it hides your ATV and provides some protection from a sudden rain storm if need be. Were I hunt there are several rock overhangs that I can get back into if necessary. Might have to wipe out a few snakes first, but they are dry. Monty

I have an old kawasaki atv & it will go about anywhere . My son moved to another state , now lives in town & he left his 2006 suzuki 500 4x4 atv here for me to use . It also has a wench . It will go places that I don't have enough nerve to take it . ATV'S are great for really getting out in the boonies .

Let's tallk about different brands for aminute. I owned a Yamaha 400 and it got stolen so I bought an Arctic Cat that had a promotional deal I couldn't refuse at the time. The Cat has a couple more inches of ground clearance than the Yamaha and that mere 2" is a lot on level ground. But I have found that on a steep hilllside, or a sharp curve going up hill that 2" makes you feel top heavy and the Cat doesn't handle near as well as the Yamaha. I was climbing a very steep grade that I had been over a hundred times on my Yamaha, but the second time I tried it with the Arctic Cat, it was so top heavy it did a backflip landing on top of me and then proceeding to go tumbling end over end all the way to the bottom of the hill. Luckily I was able to kick it up and off of me when I went over and only had some minor injuries, but such an accident has been fatal to others in the past. The Cat had $1500 worth of damage by the time it got back to the bottom. Accordingly there are places I would not go with the Arctic Cat that I would with the Yamaha. So, they won't necessarily take you anywhere, just anywhere reasonable. I have often thought about swapping back to Yamaha. And I have knowledge of several owners of Suzuki ATVs and they seem to have a lower center of gravity and their owners swear by them. Kawasaki owners seem to have a lot more minor mechanical problems but I only know of one owner of a Kaw to base that on. Bombardier gets a lot of praise it seems but I have never sat on one as well as Polaris. Some feedback from owners of various brands and sizes of machine would be welcome to me. Monty

I have a Polaris Sportsman 800. It has a wench also and I have plenty of storage room. I have to have 4x4 here in Montana. I also got it street legal so it can take me where ever I need to go. It helps living at the base of a mountain where I can just drive from my house.
As soon as most of this snows melts it will be mug bogging time!!

I have both .A 95 wrangler with a 3.5 inch lift and a yamaha bear tracker. Its a lot cheaper to use the 4wheeler then the jeep. Gas prices have put a damper to my exploring but both are fun and do the job well. :icon_pirat:

I asked for a wench to go with my ATV but all they had was winches! M  nty

Hey Magic Fingers ( MAN I love that name),
What did you have to do to get it street legal ???

Here in our part of Montana it has to have an electric horn, rear view mirror, a brake light, and a light for the plate. Then inspected before getting your plate for it.

I was given that name by many of my clients after their massages.

I love my Cat I have the AC500 Auto... Taken it tons of places from frozen rivers to frozen and thawed muskeg.. up hills and on the side of hills.. it all depends on your style of riding. But for the low end power the Cat sure does take most all others hands down and the ground clearance is amazing.. in the Mud in Alaska I have to tow out soo many Grizzly 450's its pitifull most my day is hitching up the tow rope and pulling... I have only bee nstuck once and that was trying to get a Zuki KQ 700 out of the muskeg which I tended to break the little barrier on top and pretty much sunk it up to barely below the intake..

But as stated above it all depends on your riding style. I have rolled many brands of ATV's so its all about how you ride...

My x 90 seams to go just about anywhere and haul more check this out
