I went back to the park on Thursday and only got a few hits of anything worth while but good fun all the same. The park employees turned up and asked how their share was going today (tongue in cheek). Smiles all round so I know they still don't mind me digging holes in their park.
Aside from a few nice old pennies I did find a few relics. A whopping cartridge case which is about 18/19mm across the base with headstamp initials of G.K B - I've worked out this to be the mark of George Kynoch Birmingham and I think the case is from a .577 Snyder Enfield which put this round from the late 1800s.
I also found a fairly sturdy heel plate and a very nice metal covered, gilt embossed mother of pearl button. The only markings on the back say 'gilt'. In fact it looks like its been stamped twice which leads me to think it was hand stamped. The first stamp actually looks like 'gili" as the T was weakly marked and then it appears that the second stamp has been done adjacent to it.
As soon as it gets above freezing here - I'll be back for a few more hours today.
