I found a dateless buffalo but I know what the date is because it's a variety 1. Its mintmark is S

All I know is this:
-It's a 1913 (The first year of buffalo nickels)
-It's dateless
-Its from frisco

What else should I know about my find?

Sounds like you know all you need to know!

I think you've pretty much got it covered

Maybe we should add: don't acid date it.

If the legends and date were visible, it would be graded Good with a value of $40. No date, but a clear mintmark and and other details good, it would probably be worth $15 - $20. It is the lowest mintage of the Type 1 Buffs with 2,105,000. Nice find.

you can see half of the mintmark and no date. dang im surprized i found that

Pictures please. Also can some explain the type 1 thing? Thanks

Partial mintmark? You might get $5. The only demand will be for a placefiller in a collector's album.

Easy - The Buffalo nickel has 2 different reverses. The Type 1 was produced the first year. It has the buffalo standing on a mound and 'five cents' is on the mound. Subsequent years have the buffalo standing on a partial mound with 'five cents' below. Hence, without a date, the year can still be discerned by determining the type of the reverse.

buff on the Mound - I like the sound of it

Look on the back where the buffalo is. If you see the word, "Tatanka", I'll give you a good trade for it.

If it says "5 dollars", and looks like gold, send it to me.

From the 2011 Redbook(All values for G-4)

Type 1 is Buffalo standing on a mound
Type 2 is Buffalo standing on a line(Most Buffalo nickels are this type)

1913 type 1 (30,992,000) $11.00, 1913 Type 2(29,857,186) $10.00
1913-D type 1 (5,337,000) $15.00, 1913-D Type 2 (4,156,000) $120.00 (Not a typo)
1913-S (2,105,000) $45.00, 1913-S Type 2 (1,209,000) $340.00 (Not a typo)

Hope this helps. Nice find!
