The back azimuth is the 180 degree reversal of the forward or given azimuth.
(at least that is what I learned)
I find it best to cover both directions, especially when dealing with KGC sites.

Yes, it's a 'back sight' as OD has said - a common surveying technique to establish a direction (azimuth) based on an object 'behind' the observer..

If the compass reading is 0 to 180 degrees, you add 180 to that reading to get the back course. If the reading is over 180, you subtract 180 for the back course. Jim
