Re: Bank Safety Deposit Boxes

It really isn't that far fetched to suspect that his motives were of the most nefarious kind. Stranger things have happened by far. Giving that dude my personal info was a mistake.

We know that some members have big stashes. This thread is a reminder that not all members keep their stash off site, at least not when their stash is in its infancy.

When I was hunting halves, I got a respectable amount at face before exhausting my immediate area of old rolls and reverting mostly to cents - certainly not enough to travel across country for, but probably enough to drive across town for if that were the case. I've had a SDB for a very long time and it was a no brainer for me to store my Ag there. It isn't enough volume or weight to fuss about, so I let it lay there. But, HC.C wouldn't know that my meager stash is off site. (I don't foresee anyone coming for my Cu cent hoard, but you never know.)

It is sound advice to not publicize your success to strangers or acquaintances unless you are CERTAIN to remain anonymous. The risk is too great. I would even go as far as to suggest that TNET make it a terms violation to post something that could lead someone to give up their address (except in Classifieds of course). Just a suggestion.

Shoot, Im not even telling my younger bros what Im doing. Not because of them, but because of there age, 20 and 21. They tell one of their crackhead friends, and boom, when the crackhead needs money, I am a google away.

F that.

Yup. It doesn't take long for word to get around. It's a fun subject to talk about and a lot of people wouldn't think that they are violating a confidence in naming us as PM holders.

I don't worry too much about it, but enough. After my next relocation, I'll feel more at ease. I was recently very fortunate to come into some big winnings from a lottery I didn't even intend to enter or win. As soon as the winnings clear all of the administrative BS, I'll be able to move to anywhere in the country that I choose. (I swear, nobody is slower than the Nigerians when it comes to processing lottery winnings.)

I have been thinking about storing my CRH stash in one of these for a month or so.

Anyone have an opinion of the "safety" of these? I did a quick Google search and it seems they are generally safe...

Can I just interrupt to say that it's called a safe deposit box, not a safety deposit box. :icon_scratch:

It's another spot that you can certainly spread your stash out to, but it'd still not be wise to put all of your stash in 1 place.

Fantastic, fixed.

Did things veer a little off topic? I was hoping to see some more opinions on SDB's. :icon_scratch:

My opinion is that the SDB is quite useful for important papers.

As far as valuables, I for one am not certain that the contents couldn't be seized on a whim so I have mixed feelings. When someone else controls your access to your stuff, you run the risk that they might just take your stuff (or allow someone else to take your stuff) and there is nothing you can do about it. That said, I don't currently have a better solution so I use one for storing my CRH finds of value.

Items can be seized, lost (paperwork mix-up), estate heirs may not be aware that you have one, etc. Any number of reasons, property/contents can be sent to a state's treasury only to be auctioned off if the property is unclaimed. I was successful in obtaining a few lots recently in Florida's unclaimed property auction.

Everyone here should have a safe deposit box and a post office box. They are both cheap and secure. My safe deposit box was $12/year. Don't keep all of your stash in there. Important papers like house deed, birth certificate, Social Security card and some of your stash can go in a small safe deposit box. Never give out your home address. If you have mailbox without a lock, it is not secure. Anyone can walk/drive up grab the contents and take off. It happens all the time. Get a post office box.

Good advice. I don't have a PO box, but I haven't sent out mail from my rural mailbox in over 10 years. I still receive mail in that box though, if someone wants to steal my bills, they can have 'em!
