Ever bought an item labeled "Distributed by [name of company], U.S.A." and thought, "Okay... but where was it actually made ?"
Often, the first numbers of the bar code can answer that question. True, in some cases the country assigned the number(s) may operate in other countries, but it's still a pretty good clue as to where the product may have come from.
So, if you'd rather not risk eating chicken soup cooked in Kazakhstan, you might want to put that "487" bar code can back on the shelf.
