If you can get an old deep fryer basket shovel the sand in and shake, makes finding the item a lot quicker.
 

Jeff, if I was you I would be out detecting super early in the am, as in about 12:01 am and that way you can get in some more detecting and you can go shopping with your wife before you have to leave.

Charleston is one of my favorite cities in the world .i'm probably too late but you might try Folly Beach which is where a friend of mine just moved to. I will tell you though that the sand is pretty compact there and the waves can be gnarly dude.The Isle of Palms area has some really nice beaches and maybe a public beach,not sure.We stayed at a condo a few years ago and you could walk in one direction ( to the left) and the ocean almost turned into something like a lake where the marshes were,a very calm place I would think to detect in the water a little bit.
