I posted this lock a while back in "as found" condition. My nice brother who has a part time copper/brass cleaning business took the time to clean it up for me. It now ranks as one of my favorite finds. Hope you guys like it too.
I don't know that I would have cleaned it-- some things lose value when you do that, and it changes the character. Both pics look nice though! If you ever find a rare coin, please DON'T clean it! I know a guy who found a $5000 silver dollar and reduced the value of it to $500 by cleaning it. (No kidding!)
Very nice result! Glad you are happy with it. I would be, as well!
As far as the cleaning issue goes, I agree on the point about not cleaning coins. HOWEVER, and I this is my opinion, if something like this cleaned PROFESSIONALLY, I don't think you have done any harm.
At least that is what the EXPERTS tell me on the Antiques Roadshow!!!
Thanks guys! I would NEVER attempt to clean a coin. I just cleaned this lock to bring out the beautiful brass and display it in a nice display case for all to see!!
I agree with Labrat on this one. Your brother made a beautiful relic look like a chinese reproduction. Coin or not, in my opinion (and it is only that), relics should be left as found unless you need to read lettering or something like that. This lock now looks like I could buy it at the local bike shop. cry
Walleye. I think the lock looks great. I would display it on a nice ruby red valvet or forrest green velvet. It will knock everyone's socks off. Nice find...Lance
walleye22, who found it? YOU DID BROTHA! If you want to clean it, its your choice. I dont clean my stuff but thats my choice. If everyone wanted the same thing, they would be after my old lady!
"WERTUJOLLPthhh"
What this? The sound of me while my wife is choking me for calling her my "old lady"!
I like the advertising on the lock, Sometimes that will help me find out more about a find or help me date it. What ever makes you happy, you found it and how you want to display it and clean it is your business. I personally like it to have some of the patina left on it and not give it a new look but that is just me. It looks like to me you brother knows what he is doing and did a nice job. May you have more great finds to come.
