WOW I haven't been on in a long long time. Been doing some detecting lately though and had one of my best hunts ever today.

Was detecting and not much happening when BAM out pops my first EVER gold ring. A 1962 10Kt Jostens Class ring. Found the owner and will return that tomorrow. Then going along and out pops the Key. Been wanting one of those since the first time I picked up a detector. Few minutes later I dug the Brooch. I was getting read to call it a day when I got an iffy signal and out pops the Token. Says Stephen A Douglas on one Side and HErschel V Johnson on the other and a date is partially visible. Two wheats a 10 and a 20 finished up the keepers plus one small flat button.

Thanks for looking.

Congratulations. Post information on the return of the ring and take a picture.

Banner day ME22 ! Lots of great stuff..thanks for sharing, enjoyed it and I'm sure old dude is STOKED about getting his ring back...great job...thx again..ddf

Dude - that token is pretty rare. I found one many years ago on the Cold Harbor battlefield in Mechanicsville Virginia. Does it have an 1861 date on it? There was originally a lithograph of the men in the center. What you have there is the precursor to the modern day "Political Campaign Button." Back in the day, candidates would pass those things out while they were campaigning. Those two guys from your token lost to ABRAHAM LINCOLN in 1861!! Nice find. And not a lot of them around . . .

Nice job on the ring return ! 1962 is a while ago - and I'm stunned you were able to find the owner !

Wowee that campaign token! :notworthy:

Awesome finds, congratulations!

That token could be special imo.

Herschel Vespasian Johnson (September 18, 1812 – August 16, 1880) was an American politician. He was the 41st governor of Georgia from 1853 to 1857 and the Vice Presidential nominee of the Douglas wing of the Democratic Party in the 1860 US Presidential election.
Stephen Arnold Douglas (April 23, 1813 – June 3, 1861) was an American politician from Illinois and the designer of the Kansas-Nebraska Act...
Pretty cool dig in my opinion

wow super great!! tokens are always a nice find. I like the key as well.

Great day there indeed!

Good old ring & the key is pretty smart looking.

You had a great day. A gold ring, a rare campaign token and a sweet key. I'd take a hunt like that any day of the week. Congrats!

I returned the ring. The gentleman lost it many years ago. Put it in his jacket pocket, laid that jacket on the ground to play football and when he picked his jacket up it must have fallen out. He didn't even know where to start looking. He requested no pictures and I respected that wish. The token is indeed dated 1860. The great thing was Sunday after this hunt I got to go help an elderly gentleman find his lost wedding band his recently deceased wife had given him 30 years ago. This was one of my best weekends detecting ever. Thanks everyone.

i love old tokens. i love old class rings. and i love hearing stories of people doing the right thing. wtg all around!
