Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

OK, so I think this is really stupid. I have been called to serve as a Juror for Seattle, WA. I am currently a full time student, yet they are making me do Jury Duty. I think it will be fun, but the only problem is why do we have to do it? I am also having a math test the same time that my Jury Duty is at, so I have to see if my teacher will give me the math test two days before the actual test.

Since Jury Duty will be two days, then that only gives me one days to study for my final. I have Jury Duty the 14th and 15th and have my final for my math class on the 17th. This quarter has been really stressful, as I am taking 3 classes and studying for my certification, which hopefully I will take sometime at the end of June or in the middle of July.

If you are wondering why they called me so early, I think it is that I cannot be drafted into the military because of my medical condition. Currently I have had 4 heart surgeries through out my life and since I am considered a class D in the draft, I would be the very last one to go if the war got to serious and they ran out of class A,B, and C's to defend our country.

I think Jury Duty is stupid and a waste of time because mainly I do not want to put a murder in jail because he may come after me and KILL me.

What are your opinions?

You should be able to get out of it simply by telling them you're a student and would like to be excused, unless you are already past that point.

I think everyone should do Jury duty

That said just check the student exemption box and mail it in and be done with it.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

Well there are several ways to look at this. One is that you can petition the court and have your duty changed to a later date. The other is to take your books and study while you sit to see you you are even selected for a jury. You may not even get a criminal case, there is a good chance that you would get a civil case. Either way, during the Voir dire you can be very opinionated and that too, will remove you from a jury. Attorney's do not like to see someone that already formed an opinion before hearing the facts. I can give you a ton of other ways to avoid jury duty, but you would have to buy my book :tongue3:

By the way, since you do not want to serve on a jury which is a civic duty, I just hope that you never have any trouble in your life and will have to depend on a jury yourself one day. You may find me sitting there waiting to send you away :laughing9:

You can be excused for medical reasons. Take your papers to your doctor.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

ive already tried to get out of it because of school and no i do not have any criminal record. I'm clean as a whistle.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

You'll get no sympathy from me. I've been summoned at least 10 times, served once. Take a book and jacket with you (some courtrooms are cold.) You'll be sitting around most of the day.

I think Jury Duty is stupid and a waste of time because mainly I do not want to put a murder in jail because he may come after me and KILL me.

Most jury trials are mundane, not the sensational stuff they put on Law & Order. Suck it up and go. You'll meet a lot of other nice people who also think it is a "waste of time"....

I didn't even mention criminal specifically. You may be involved in a civil matter and still have to face a jury. You may face criminal charges of which you are 100% innocent and still be sent to trial. You can be hauled into court for a numerous amount of reasons and still will have to face a jury of your peers. Right now you're in college and I bet you have consumed alcohol at a frat party at some point, so live it up.

Suck it up and do your duty.... :icon_thumright:

It is part of the price we pay for living in the greatest country in the world.....I have served several times, it is an inconvenience in one way, but a patrotic duty in another....Be thankful you live in a country where you have a jury of normal citizens, rather then one person deciding the guilt of the accused.

To be honest, I am staying at my parents house while I am going to college. My Community College was just transferred to a 4 year college not to long ago. I have not been drinking much alcohol. I basically do not get invited to parties at all either.

Bingo :hello2: This is what we call entrapment :icon_thumleft: You admit to underage drinking and if I am not mistaken it is illegal in all 50 states.. So keep in mind you are not squeaky clean and could end up sleeping with Bubba..

So just do your civic duty

This has been a public service announcement from Spartacus53 :laughing9:

Just a side note. Today is the 6th and if my math is correct you have 11 days until the test. Maybe you should crack open the books and :read2: now.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

was called for jury duty once --it was a capital murder case * here in nassau county --seems 3 dirtbags --decided to rob some rich folks staying and eating at the local ritz carlton on amelia island * as the 2 rich couples left the hotel area in a car --2 of the thugs got out of their car ran up up besides the victims car (stopped at a stop sign) and shoved the guns in the "open" front windows ?( both driver and passenger side) and said give up the cash --the victims did all 4 of em --the crooks not wanting to IDed the shot all 4 leaving them for dead --2 died but 2 lived one horribly mangled with her jaw shot off

the thugs were caught --the wheel man cut a deal and tesified on the shooters --my trail was to be the "wheel man" -- they asked if anyone has a problem with plea deals -- I said yes --that was it --I got "kicked" off the jury pool

You can use this opportunity to do some networking and possibly pick up some new spots to hunt.

It's loads of fun, I actually check my mailbox everyday praying that I get a notice.

Yeah right, it sucks, but as many others have pointed out, it is your civil duty.

I was to go in for it about two months ago, the night before I called the hotline and they said it was canceled, I was happy.

If you signed up to Vote this is Probably Why
although they deny it.
I Never got called till I Registered to Vote
& It didn't stop till I Canceled My Registration to Vote

Not saying it will happen for you,
I'v been Drafted for county Jury Duty 3 times

the first 2 I Showed up was there
about 2 Hours & They sent me home.

They show you a Lame Movie from the 50's
on Jury Duty. The Judge is Smoking a Pipe,
some of the Jurers are Smoking :D

Then you sit in a room.

They then call a group from the room
to go in to a court room.
Tell you what the case is about.

Then Ask as a whole Questions.

Example. If there is a Cop involved,
They ask everyone who Dosn't trust the
Police to rase their Hands.
IF You rase your hand they
send you back to the waiting room.

If there are not alot of cases,
once they pick a Jury they send the rest home.

3rd. Time I was drafted they almost picked me,
I told them I am a Chain Smoker & Since they Discriminate
against Smoking I Would be sitting there
Thinking about Needing a smoke & Not about what
anyone had to say.
Plus I Already Made up my Mind & Will not
send a teen to jail for making a Mistake.
in front of all the Potential
Jurers.

They paid me for my time & Sent me Home :tongue3:

Received Letters Twice for Federal Jury Duty.
Had to call the day before, When I Called
Got a Recorded Message saying
Nevermind.

Point is I'm sure the first day You could
find reasons why you would be unacceptable
to sit on a Jury.

Weak Bladder, Don't believe in DUI Laws if
a dui Case, Know somone Involved, Etc.

Ivan & Jeff of PA, thanks a million for giving him additional ways to avoid jury duty by telling him what to say during the Voir Dire.. I was trying to make a few extra bucks He should be paying for these tips like I had to. :laughing9:

I actually served in Brooklyn, NY on a rape case and once in a civil matter against the NY Transit Authority. Both cases were interesting and I am fascinated by the law and how it does, or does not work.
The rape case lasted a week and we were sequested for 2 nights before arriving at a guilty verdict on several of the accounts rape, abduction, robbery and a gun possession charge was dropped. As for the TA case, the lady should have settled with the TA of $50,000, she ended up with $0.0 It is fascinating to see how some claimants try and work the system to make a buck.

Things could be worse you could of been called to jury the OJ Simpson trial ? :laughing7: one guy grew a full beard while severing jury duty on that one 134 days long. Here you have to call in first to see if your needed that day or just go there and wait 2 hours .Dd60

I think they started that in NJ too, but so far they haven't called me yet :icon_thumleft: Now if called you only have a 2 day window to be selected. Back in NYC you had to report every day for a week, and that was a drag.

Oh, and for a criminal case all you have to say is "he looks guilty to me", that will surely get you the boot

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

Show Up or you may be needing a lawyer. One girl down here, in Houston, was selected for jury and decided not to return the next day -- big trouble now.

Besides, TURN OFF YOUR PHONE, (if it rings when Judge is talking, you may be going to jail) and just sit there, reading book, people watching, etc.
-- Normally, released in couple hours, after choosing jury panels for the day.

Besides, Lawyers DO NOT WANT ANYONE ON JURY THAT THEY CAN NOT INFLUENCE, or WILL NOT SYMPATHIZE WITH DEFENDANT.
Just ask yourself,
1) What did the police officer observe and file in his/her report? -and-
2) What video/surveillance evidence is there to support the police/fire/investigator/whatever position?
Dash Camera Video, Surveillance Camera recordings, Photos of crime scene?
(Here is video of defendant attempting to fence stolen merchandise at police-sting pawn shop, and bragging about his/her robberies so far this month -- kind of trial I like, undercover cops buy stolen merchandise.)
3) How many ALCOHOLIC DRINKS do you have to have before you are blitzed out of your mind?
4) Exactly how many MICRO-SECONDS did you come to a FULL STOP before you RAN the stop sign -or- red light?
Pretty near sums up most trials!

Probably leaves you out, even if you have to stick around.
:coffee2:
