Well apparently it is the law, you feel you need to change it, do something about it and get it changed. I guess if you were in charge of al laws, the world would be a happy place :laughing9:

There's nothing I can do, because there are too many people who accept anything their government does. Freedom to choose, opposed to forced service. You would think it would be an easy choice.

Anyway, I'm not here to change the world, I'm just giving my opinion like everyone else. The world will change when it's time.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

my father was recently pulled for jury duty but was excused the defendant had 8 charges varying from b&e to armed robbery my father wasnt trying to get out of it but when they were doing jury selection and he was asked if he could be impartial and he gave an honest answer "with that many charges your really going to have to prove he's innocent to me 8 different people in 8 different areas all couldnt have id'd him and he be not guilty of something"

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

I do have to wonder though, if jury duty is only 2 days it surely isn't for a murder case. When I have gotten the notice I wasn't told anything except when to appear. One time they came out and told everyone the guy took a plea deal and we could all go home. Other times they would take attendance. Then they would tell us what the case was about and we would sit there while the jury and the alternates were selected after being questioned by both sides and sometimes the judge. How do you know a case will take 2 days? I was on one jury that was going to take 2 days but we stayed late to avoid coming in the next day. A case could take an hour or 3 weeks, you never know 'til it happens. I wish they would move the jury duty age requirement up to at least the age to drink. Same with voting. I think to cast an educated vote and the ability to decifer guilt or innocence should be in more mature hands. That's why 20-year-olds aren't even supposed to drink.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

Ok, here's how you get out of jury duty:

If you notice, when they send you the notice for jury duty it says you are "served". If you do not respond, they have no way of knowing if you were actually served or not and there is nothing they can do about it. Don't respond to the summons and they have no way of proving whether you received your notice or not. If you have already sent your response in stating that you received your notice then it's too late. :-\

Personally, I do not feel any obligation to serve jury duty. As far as I'm concerned, my civic duty stopped when the courts quit enforcing the laws and started letting criminals get away with everything. When they started making victims out of criminals I said, "Screw them!!" The judicial system is a big fat joke as far as I'm concerned.

In 1967 at the age of 19 I received my draft notice and and instead join the Airforce, at 20 I was on B-52 over Viet Nam on bombing missions.

How many soldiers do you suppose were 18,19 or 20 years old that died on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day........

Your complaining about a little inconveniegrantsnce because of jury duty?

People complain about worthless politicians, but yet try to find ways to get out of jury duty ...Do your duty and stop complaining, it could be worse, you could be under fire in Iraq.

I guess you're right, a little communism won't hurt. Just don't take it to extremes, right?

KK, you need to go look up the word Communism, it has nothing to do with being required to serve. Communism is a theory or system of social organization, which is based on the belief of holding all property in common, actual ownership is to the community as a whole or to the state and not to an individual.

The right to trial by jury in this country dates back to the Colonial period. ... It is both an honor and a duty to participate in our judicial process. The right to a trial by jury in the United States is guaranteed by the Sixth and Seventh Amendments to our Constitution, and people have a right to have matters determined by a jury of their peers according to our Constitution..

There is no free ride in this country, everyone has obligations to fullfill for being an American citizen, serving in our judicial system is not only an honor, but is also one of our civic duties as citizens of this country.

KK, wrong .....During the American Revolutionary War, the states sometimes drafted men for militia duty or to fill state Continental Army units, so your once again wrong, the states at the very foundation of this country recognized that there were obligations to be filled by the citizens.

If you want to enjoy the privileges of being a citizen you have to fulfill the obligations of being a citizen....

I know what communism means. And it's more than just a definition in a dictionary. It includes being told what you can and cannot do. Do you challenge that as fact?

And who said anything against the right to a trial by jury? But if criminals have a right to trial by jury, then why shouldn't I have a right to choose whether or not I serve? Why are the rights of some more important than the rights of others?

Okay, the colonists did all these things. Guess what else they did. They owned slaves. Like it or not, slavery was part of our country, including our laws. Were they right? I think we can agree that they were not right in everything they did, although they were better than what they fought against. Now you like to brag about what all you've done. What did you fight for, if not for freedom? Maybe you should look up that word, TH - FREEDOM. It's the reason we fled to this country in the first place.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

OK, here's the scoop from King County (Washington state)

I am a full-time student. Are students exempt from jury service.

No. Students should take advantage of the postponement option. Most students opt to serve during term breaks. This also applies to out-of-state students. Call (206) 205-3838 (Seattle) or (206) 205-3838 (Kent) or email JuryDutySEA@kingcounty.gov or JuryDutyRJC@kingcounty.gov to postpone.

You can reschedule your jury to another time if you choose. That way you won't have to worry about having to take a test or whatever. Problem solved! You may even have time to reflect on your feelings about the entire matter.
Peachy, quit leading the man (boy) astray you catty thing you. ;D

KK,

Here is a fact for you, it doesn't matter, if it's a democratic, a socialist, a fascist, a communist or a dictatorship, in all you are still told things you can and can't do.....Only in a Utopia are you not told what you can and can't do, and that does not exist, except maybe in your mind....

I also know what I fought for, the same thing my father fought for in WWII, which is why I did not flee when drafted, I stayed and I served my country. I forfilled my duty to my country then, I also vote, and I do jury duty when called now.....

I served in the U.S. Airforce from 1967-1971, including flying on 52's in combat......Now, what branch of service did you serve in?

Yep, I thought I had you pegged about right. All about you, isn't it.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

i would have served no problem -- problem is I do not like "plea deals" where crooks cut deals so the cops and da can make a "easy" case for themselves --yes the "shooters" went to jail -- yes the wheel man got "some time" - he knew he was going to take part in a "armed" hold up -- so he had to know these kinds of things can happen during a armed robbery * he was "down wit dat" now let his butt get "life" wif no parole --the shooters fry em.

so sad to bad I 'm too "hardcore" to be on a jury ---screw the crooks if the solid real "proof" is there that they did it. -- I 'm tired of see the working man bust his hump --only to let lowlifes steal their stuff and get a slap on the wrist when they get caught "red handed" at last -- both the big corperate crooks and petty theif types need to serve time behind bars.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

My opinion:

In our county, when called to serve you serve for a time period of six months. If you can serve without undue hardship, please do at least once (in your lifetime). By serving that one time, nobody can accuse you of not doing your civic duty and you can honestly say you did your part in the "process" we all complain about.

Being on a jury is not always about crimes, I served in a civil case brought on by a shady business man doing his best to screw a little old lady out of her property and I am glad I was in that particular jury and helped sort through the bulls*it. We saved her property and very likely her retirement.

I hope I get the same consideration should I ever be in that position.

Re: Been called to serve my country..By going to jury duty...I'm only 20! Opinions?

I emailed Kendra Lafayette and asked if students could be excused from jury duty. She works for the city of Seattle at the courthouse. Her email is kendra.lafayette@seattle.gov . This is the response I got from her:

Excusals from jury service are processed on a case by case basis. We do excuse college students if it is a hardship.

Now, is there anything else we can do for you? Appears that you can either reschedule your service to a more convenient time for you or, if it REALLY presents a "hardship", you can be excused all together.
