Hit the beach a few hours before low tide and when I got there I almost didn't get out of my car......Beach was totally sanded in....(all the beaches around here have been especially after the last storm a few days ago) and didn't look promising at all. I decided since I was already there I give it a shot and man am I glad I did! Didn't find much on my outbound trip, few coins and some odds and ends but nothing good until I got to one spot and hit a NICE BIG hit and only one scoop down was the very nice 1940 1/2 dollar! I gridded off the whole area and pulled allot more coins and added 4 more silver bringing my total to 5 for the day! Best silver day ever (so far) for me. Was really nice to have gotten a good hunt in as the last several haven't produced much! Thanks for looking!

I also found what looks like it is the remnant of some kind of token (ace shaped hole in the center), a piece of sea glass that has part of the word "NORFOLK" on it, and some metal rings. The linked chain looks to be more modern but I have no idea what any of the metal rings are for. Any Ideas?

Fantastic hunt, man! :) That's a nice haul of silver. Exciting, yes?

Dag you Pirate....Nice haul on the Silver!! Love those Halfs!! Hey, Welcome Back!! No place like home!!

Nice day of silvers !!! sweet day indeed.

The rings are from scallop rakes....they make up the nets that are attached to the iron frames they drag on the bottom.

Nice day!

Curious, is there any way to make those silvers look shiny again or is that stuff pretty much stuck on there forever?

I'm guessing you could electrolysis those silvers ? I'm always stunned at how badly silver gets chewed by salt water ! I just can't get myself
to believe that that can happen to silver - Coin silver being 10 percent copper explains it I suppose . Can any of you beach hunters tell me
does .999 or fine silver come out unscathed by salt water ?

Not just salt water either. I have found old silver in riverbeds that have been there for 50-60 years that's so black it is almost impossible to get it all off.

Sweet finds, you had a great day!!!!!

Well it really isn't the black/tarnish I'm commenting on - it's the incredible pitting that I guess is the result of long term exposure to salt water
in conjunction with the copper in the coin silver alloy .

Great finds Doc! Thanks for sharing...

Nice job on them silvers...

Even .999 pits and discolors, badly, in salt water. Just goes to show 'ya that sodium is some wicked-nasty stuff!! 8-)
Great finds, there Doc!

Nice silver haul!
The rings looped together reminds me of woman's belt. Not sure what the large ring is. If it opened at one time could be a necklace. The thick round item looks like the metal plates that go around drain pipes where they go into the floor.
That's my best guess. Guess I am wrong on the joined rings.

Killer day ya had there, Congrats!!

Sweet silver!

Gravediggermax says that the rings are most likely from a "crab dredge" that is towed along behind a boat and scoops up the crabs. I like what AQUA said too about it being a scallop rake......maybe could be both? Sounds like it is used the same way and may use the same materials/configuration.
