My only answer for the shield thingy is a Chinese button. The dragon along the top and characters along the bottom and shank on the back give it away. Unfortunately, I can't date the item.

As a former 9th Infantry soldier, the center of the button reminded me of the 9th IN Regt crest.

Thanks for your service--was in the Airforce myself--keep swinging hard

That's a Lincoln cent, possibly 1911, the 3rd year of produciton. Oh, wait, you mean the button thingy. Ok. From my vast experience (well, sort of vast), there are a lot of decorative buttons out there. Doesn't have to be Chinese, and the back is the "push through" of the front design. My experience comes from a really cool looking eagle with a cannon and anchor, and 11 stars. Figured I had a Confed. button in No. Colorado. Someone said they could still be purchased at JOANN's. I would have lost money if I had bet against that. And the button was probably old, the company had been around for 125 years. And then someone posted a similar button, but the eagle had bigger knees and other differences. Apparently, they changed dies from time to time.
Why it has paint splattered on it, who knows? That part is weird, maybe an effort to "decorate". I suspect someone took Grandma's button can out in the shady yard to play with and lost a button.
Still, it is always fun to ponder the possibilities. Any button is interesting.
