Big silver at 1857 church

Spent the weekend in a small town with a church that was founded in 1857 (old by our standards around here for you New Englanders and Old Englanders!). Found a nice 21-S Morgan that has a tough stain on the ear, and a decent 54-D Washington that cleaned up nicely, along with a dented pocket watch cap I thought was nice. I also found 17 clad coins and lots of various debris items. Was hoping to find 19th century coins, but two nice chunks of 20th century silver makes the weekend a winner! Thanks for looking!

Congratulations on the beautiful silver. You are right about the ages of churches around here. I live I in east central Mo. and hunt country churches, and the oldest date I've seen is 1858.

thanks - yes, it was the AT Pro. It hit a solid 99 and didn't waver. I told the guy hunting with me that either it was a big silver or I was never going to forgive my ATP! She didn't let me down. It's my third silver dollar and each time it has been strong and no doubt. I hope to get back there and find another, but I'm still happily holding this one and loving the sheer weight of the silver. It's addicting it is. I can't imagine what those THers that find sunken ships of silver and gold must feel like, but I hope to know one day!! Thanks for the note.

I'm guessing that's not your first dug silver dollar ,since you didn't go ape sh!t in your post . Great find ! If it is your first - welcome to the silver dollar club ( a fairly elite club )

Ha! Thanks - I was pretty apey in the moment. It's my third, but that doesn't make me any less happy about it! In 2017 now, I have found a silver dollar and a gold dollar (my pic), so whatever the rest of the year holds, I've had a good one for me!

Congrats on the HUGE silver! I'd really love a silver dollar but, I think I want my first seated half dime & shield nickel notched off my list first. Oh, and the Flying Eagle penny. Then I want a silver dollar!

Aye, those are still on my list as well. I had hopes of such coins when I hit this site, but it turned out different than I'd supposed. Not complaining tho!

My working theory is that a kid got it at church and then lost it outside. That's based on an old timer there telling me about an old man he remembered giving a silver dollar to kids when they got baptized. I suspect there were a lot of conversions there during the Depression! I've found three silver dollars and I wonder the same thing... how could you not know?! Of course, how many folks lose their wedding rings and we end up finding them? I guess if you are distracted, it happens... and aren't we glad it does?!
