A JOINT operation is underway this weekend to ensure the safety of the West Sussex coastline, after more than 2,000 tons of timber was reported to be floating towards the south coast.
The cargo ship Ice Prince was on her way to Greece with more than 5,000 tons of wood when she sank 25 nautical miles south of Portland on Monday.

Her crew of 20 was rescued, but some of the timber they were transporting was lost to the sea.

Strong winds and rain are expected to continue through the weekend, and it is too dangerous to try to recover the cargo from the ocean.

There are concerns that the sea could throw the timber against shingle banks and groynes, causing flood defence damage.

That sure is one heck of a mess. Glad no one lost their life.

If they wanted to get rid of the lumber a few signs " Free Wood" would have the beach cleaned off in no time.

Nice pic.

I am sure this would of been cleared over night with a "Free Wood" sign but politics doesn't allow for common sense >:( >:( >:(

Just don't understand why someone isn't salvaging that wood. Could be used to build something. I would love to have some of that.

Re: Biggest beach find ever England (UPDATED)

Wreckers warned not to touch wood

The ship spent more than 24 hours listing before it sank

Any timber washed ashore from a sunken cargo ship off the South West coast should not be touched, potential scavengers have been warned.
People who keep washed-up timber from a cargo ship which sank off the Dorset coast are being warned they face arrest and a fine of up to £2,500.

Dozens of birds coated in tar-like oil are being found along the Sussex coast as the carnival atmosphere surrounding the Ice Prince wood wreck takes a sinister turn.

Animal rescue officers began a major rescue operation in Littlehampton today after 20 of swans were spotted coated in thick black oil.

There were also reports of helpless birds being washed up in Selsey, Bognor, Goring, Hove, Seaford and Newhaven but coastguards said they were not aware of any slick moving east from where the Ice Prince sank 26 miles south of Portland Bill.

Thanks for rubbing in the Pull Tab problem. ;D

I was amazed that when detecting in the UK, we found more gold coins than pull tabs and no aluminum slaw. Makes me want to move there.

I'm guessing 2000 years ago you had no one there to stop them ;D

What you see spans for some 20 miles and theres more on its way :o :o :o

Re: Biggest beach find ever England *UPDATED*

You'd thing being aboard a ship full of timber would be a good deal, but here's a horrible story. In WWI a ship carring war supplies was torpedoed by a U-Boat in the North Atlantic. The crew got off a Mayday and abandoned ship, but as the fleet follower boat was trying to rescue the swimmers and lifeboats from the ship it was breaking up on the way to the bottom deep below and many in the water were killed by wooden aircraft propellers in the cargo that were bouyant and rocketing up to the surface. Ugh.

Bad Weather Thwarts Rescue Bid

Updated:23:02, Friday February 01, 2008
The RAF has had to abandon an attempt to rescue the injured crew of a cargo ship.
The Riverdance ran aground

The captain of the Horn Cliff is believed to have suffered spinal injuries and internal bleeding when he encountered a force-10 gale 200 miles off the Scilly Isles. Other crew members were also injured.

The RAF had dispatched a rescue helicopter and Nimrod plane in the hope the crew could be taken off the ship this evening.

I wish captain and crew all the best :'( :'( :'(

but once this new cargo hits the beaches get those detectors out boys ;D ;D ;D
