Weatherman wrong, and the rain held off. So I got out again for a couple of hours, could be the last time of 2010.

When this coin came out I said this can't be a coin, it's too big. After I got home and got the stuff cleaned up, I got thinking, and measured it. Now it is completely toast so I can't prove a thing, but it must be a cartwheel. Feel free to correct me on that. I also got my second crotal bell this fall, so was happy about that.

That's a biggie! A cartwheel would be nearly three times as thick as a normal copper. Is your copper that thick?

Definitely not a cartwheel. The rim always shows even on the most worn coins.

I have quite a few large blank coppers, and there's no way to ever know what they were.

Great find, Congradulations. I found one of those a while back. Mine had turned black, and will not clean off. In the sunlight I can see the face, and writing on it.

More rotted than worn, I know what you mean about the rim though. Are there any other coins that big off the top of your head.

If I had to make a wild guess I would go with a Portugal or Brazil (80 or 100) Reis. They're large diameter, not real thick, and do turn up in the east. (I've found a few - just not as big a denomination)

Hey Rick,

Yep that's a Cartwheel. Nice find. I got one here on Long Island a few years back, and mine is totally worn smooth. I can just about make out the inner circle and the knee of Britannia.

Great looking copper there Rick! :icon_thumright:
Sure would look nice if it was made into a ring!
Talk about bling! :laughing7:

Just kidding of course.

I cannot say what it is, but since you have calipers, do you also have a scale to weigh it, that would be a big indicator to either yay or nay it being the Cartwheel 2 pence. The Brazilian Reis are much lighter and sizes varied it appears from what I read.

Cartwheels weigh about 2 ounces(56 grams + or - ), even accounting for wear, the weight should still be within 10% of that weight.

Nice going on the big copper what ever it turns out to be. :icon_thumright:
Here's the One Cartwheel weight showing a lighter weight.

Brazil also has at least three other candidate coins--all 960 Reis and all 41mm in diameter:
Brazil/Colony 1806-1816
Brazil/UK 1819-1822
Brazil/Empire 1822-1831

Don.......

Pepperj, your coin evidently is the Penny and not the Two pence to weigh 26 grams, diameter should be about 39mm on the Penny, versus the heavier and thicker 41mm of the Two Pence. If the calipers are correct on 41mm on Rick's coin and the weight is not within x-amount of the 2 ounces (56 grams or so) of what a Cartwheel should weigh, than it is most likely another coin, possible one of the Brazilian Reis as stated. They varied in diameter over the years.

Don

What does your coin weigh, Rick ? :icon_scratch:

Not such a "wild Guess" I agree 100% Brazil, maybe even 40 reis KM 398 @ 42 MM (non rotted)
