Great Finds! Those two knives are cool.

Like that square knife. The long one is it a backed knife? Or has it been worked all the way around all edges.

Thanks. All edges are flaked.

made for a handle like this
it is not a backed blade
IMG_1158.webpIMG_1159.webp it would have been hafted

we find bunches of broke blades of this kind
but a complete one like this is a tough find
and KRF blade is harder
our friend brce found a beautiful clear banded agate blade a few yrs back...it is the nicest blade i have ever seen

Here's a KRF one found early this summer. I think I've got some agate also and will post if I can find them.

Those knifes are great. Mine are so primitive compared to those.:notworthy: I imagine the tractor and plow takes its share of those..

Thanks. I know "Mandan" pieces are extremely well crafted. But I think that it has a lot to do with not only the quality of the material being worked but also the quality of the tools used.
I don't think the plowing does get many. The ground/dirt is fairly soft and we don't till very deep. Maybe a knick or two on some, but overall I think most of the "brokes" were long ago broken.
The blade above was found just on the edge of the garden, an area that plowed probabley more then the rest out there.

That last photo of the knife river flint knife is one really beautiful find.

i think you are right about all the broke knives
they are mostly broke when found for sure but probably not all from farm equipment
remember when you and you son and me found about 40 some broke knives in a half hour beside the road?
they were mostly broke chert examples

That's funny that you were hunting by the road. I thought only I did that. If I see a nice red clay bank along the high way, I'm on it, if the area is right. I have had two cops stop to ask "what are you doing". I said nothing much just looking for arrowheads. They both ask "any luck" I think in disbelief. Both times I had actually found at least one. I showed them what I had found and it blew their mind. One of the cops was a nice looking lady, so of course, I gave her the arrowhead as a gift. The road is one place that every one here never thinks to look. Most of my road finds are in perfect condition, unlike what you speak of.

I think another big reason for the quality of the workmanship was the culture. Food was abundant and they had the time to sit and make fine tools. You can be creative on a full stomach. I think your guys were heavy, hahaha. Nice finds T Witko. :)

Humorous but most likely true. Very nice artifacts for sure.
