I have used this machine for almost 12 years and it has always performed well. However, I visited Gulf Shores Alabama last year and every time I got near the water where the waves had come up, the machine seemed to just go crazy. I was using all-metal and it just constantly went off. When I switched to disc or notch it just kept beeping. In all the different modes I adjusted way down, way up, and I finally just hunted away from the water.

Does anyone have any comments on this or advice? I know the machine is old but it still seems to perform well away from the described environment.

Any info is appreciated.

From the Manual:
When searching in the ALL METAL mode, it is important that the detector
be ground balanced to offset the effects of any minerals present in the
soil or to balance the effects of salt water when you search near the
ocean. This is how you can adjust the ground balance.
1. Turn GB knob 100% clockwise.
2. Hold searchcoil several inches above the ground.
3. If you’re not in ALL METAL mode, momentarily press the ALL METAL
button. If you’re already in ALL METAL mode, momentarily press the
GROUND TRAC button.
4. Lower the searchcoil to within about an inch of the ground. In most
soils, the sound volume will increase.
5. Turn the GB knob slowly counterclockwise until the sound is almost,
but not quite, gone.
6. You are now ground balanced and ready to search.
NOTE: If you want to ground balance a little more accurately, do the
following additional steps:
7. Raise the searchcoil again, several inches above the ground.
8. Momentarily press the GROUND TRAC button.
9. Lower the searchcoil to within about an inch of the ground. If the sound
goes up, carefully turn the ground balance knob slightly
counterclockwise until the sound almost goes away. If the machine is
quite, carefully turn the ground balance knob slightly clockwise until you
just barely hear sound.

I was hunting the beach by Panama City this summer and it worked pretty good.
I did notice that at Strong wave action I did get chatter so I just got a little rhythm going with
the wave action and it worked out good.

This happens to most land detectors while getting near the saltwater wet sand or water due to the presents of higher concentrations of salt and black sand. There isn't much you can do for this except get a true beach machine or Sov. GT. and ditch the land unit. Different tools for different jobs.

I agree, if your going to spend a lot of time in the water you need a new tool.
If it's just a vacation thing, it's up to you to spend the cash to get the cash or pulltabs in my case

I make quite a few trips to the gulf so I invested in a Sand Shark. Works great for me.
