Brass/Bronze round/ slotted part?

This is a scarce find from old homesites in New England, but ive never figured out what they were for... the ones I have are all about the same size and design. there's a radiused seat 90 degrees to the slot. I keep thinking it was some sort of wagon part, but it might be too light weight for that. Someone suggested a cover hold down part or part from a scythe?? Some sort of retainer, 1/4 turn fastener part? Another mystery part for all to have fun with.

so its the handle part of the scythe ... ive seen the iron piece before and actually there was a nut on the opposite end to tighten the handle in place. it makes sense now! Many thanks!
