Hello! Found this today in an antiques shop. Owner didn't know what it is. Appears to be made of brass plated pot metal, zinc, or pewter. Has two tabs on the bottom which allow the pieces to separate. About 2.5 inches tall, 3.5 inches wide. Racking my brains, looked on google, and I can't figure out what this thing is. Help would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like solid brass to me. I don't see any pot metal corrosion leaking through. I assume the two lugs on the bottom pivot to lock the second piece to the first? Will the two pieces nest together also? Like spoons in a drawer?

Has a gray appearance, like pewter, on the bottom of one of the spouts, as well as areas without brass. They do not nest together. The only way they fit together is facing opposite directions.

Thanks for the ideas!

Forgot to add, the lugs do lock the second piece to the first.

I wonder... if that is tin plated on that part only...

Tin lined would be indicative of a "food" designed item.

I spent a while researching this item a few days ago and came up empty.

The new pics with hands in the photo show me that this piece is WAY bigger than I originally thought.

That's why it's important to show the item with a common, similar sized object in the photo.

Hope this helps. Your typical soup can size.

I keep waiting for someone who grew up on a farm to pipe in and say "it's a blah blah"... for I think it has to do with some sort of farming implement etc...

Like a "hemp stalk de- stemmer" or some oddballer thingamajiggy.

The mystery continues.

The new pic helps. Thx

I think the 'spouts' were used like shoe horns to slip into a small opening and hold it open. Someone earlier suggested speculum but I think this piece is more mechanical - not a medical item of any sort.

It is interesting.
We seem to be running low on ideas for nailing this one, so I'll toss a question in, here.

Can it be put together with the spouts facing the opposite direction?
(not nested, but base to base)

The pieces appear to be soldered, with the whole bottom of one piece completely coated. I believe they're solid brass since pot metal doesn't lend itself to soldering for some reason.

Let me ask you this : if the piece were attached to the top of a flask of water, would one spout pour a wider stream than the other ? It's just that it reminds me of something to water plants.

Yes, but they're very loose. That's not to say they weren't used that way. Since it's been so difficult to identify this thing, I'm wondering if it's not a small part in something very large--something so relatively small that you wouldn't even notice it.

If you look at my original post, second photo, you can see there is a slight difference in the width of the spouts. They might pour different sized streams, but I don't think they'd be that much different.

This is the closest thing I've seen. Although I don't think this is it...

What puzzles me is why was it made in 2 pieces ? It could easily have been made as one.
