bringing IH date back

Have an Indian head pretty toasted. Any recommendations on how to bring the date out?

Get a jewelers loupe. I have a few wheats I couldn't get the date out 'til I did an extreme close up.

What exactly is that, a magnifying type glass

a little olive oil to keep the "wet" look, then hold at steep angles under strong light to see if you can get any shadow or highlights from the existing date

Jeweler's loupe is that "glass" they hold to their eye when looking at a gem. Typical size is 10 power. TTC

Lay a piece of paper over the coin.Take a very sharp pencil and with the side of the pencil point very lightly go over the paper thats over the coin.Dont use the pencil point use the side of the point.

Put some hydrogen peroxide in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat no more than 20-30 seconds. Drop the coin in there, leave for a few seconds. Gently rinse it with clean water afterward. Pat dry with a paper towel. See if that helps.

Using a 10X or higher power loupe would help as well. Loupe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (you can find loupes for sale through many different resources -- at coin shows, from coin dealers, on eBay, etc).

I've tried this I don't know how many times with coins and I've never been able to get it to work, even trying it on newer coins. Not sure what I do wrong, but I sure suck at it.

Appreciate all the advice. Tried the peroxide and pencil rub. Still can't fully make it out. Guess I should invest in the jewelers glass. No doubt will come in handy in the future as well

Peroxide works awesome on bronze, just dont over cook it.

This looked like concrete, use peroxide in a poperie warmer and tooth picks. Rinsed in cold water and coated it with vaseline. First try at cleaning like this and first IH.

Try sticking a piece of regular cellophane tape over the coin. I have been amazed at the detail it brings out trying to figure out a toasted coins date.
