Hello everyone, long time no see.. or hear.. or read?.. whatever! I've been so busy with work lately that I don't know if I'm coming or going half the time and the other half.. well, we've all seen the weather, be it first hand or in the news.. what a WINTER!!! Here in Kentucky it's been one hell of a roller coaster that's for sure.. one week we're in the 60's and having severe thunderstorms and biblical flooding and tornadoes... a few days later we're in the single digits (with the wind chill factor) with freezing rain, snow, and all the joys that go with it. Needless to say, there's not been a lot of metal detecting going on, at least not by myself here locally where I live.
*** AND I'M GOING NUTS!!! ***
Well today I got a break! I was off, it wasn't too cold, and though it was spitting some very fine (small) snow occasionally, the ground wasn't frozen into concrete and the wind wasn't howling. My dearest wife was off attending a wedding shower and I found myself with a little free time. Oh YEAH! I had my detector in the truck and pedal to the metal before she was out of sight! My cat is probably still looking for the fire! (wondering where the fire was.. nevermind..) Anyway, I was actually off to run an errand for myself for a change. I needed a tool for my toolbox at work, something that the company doesn't provide, so I was off to the local Harbor Freight to procure one. On my way I passed two Tot lots that I've had my eye on for some time, but have not had the opportunity to check out. These two lots are about a block apart, in the heart of downtown Lexington.. well.. ok, so they're a little off to one side.. maybe in the lungs of the city so to speak. <grin> I'm fairly sure that nobody else has been detecting these two particular playgrounds since, one, there's not much parking available, and two, they are in.. well, shall we say "a lower rent" district. I would never consider going there, to either one, at dusk or at night, or even in warmer or nicer weather when a lot of people would be "hanging out". But today was perfect! Though, as I said, not bitterly cold or wet or raining, it was just dreary and cold enough to keep casual park goers at home or indoors. Perfect for Me!
Another way I know nobody else has been detecting here is by the number of my finds! WOOHOO!!! I was getting hits the moment I turned on the detector, even before I set foot in the woodchips. I picked up over two dollar in clad, within the first five feet of the border of the woodchips, by the swingset, the first swing.. only on ONE side of the first swing! Some of the coins had been there a while, down 6 to 8 inches in the chips, some were on the surface (or just under) amidst the woodchips. Quarters, dimes.. LOTS OF DIMES, nickels and pennies of course. I was utterly shocked at the scarcity of pull tabs too. What's up with that?
That's about time I found my first "heart" too.. a pretty little thing, some cheap bling, probably from a gumball machine.. a pendant I believe. More clad, more clad, more clad, more clad. A RING!
At least it turned out to be a ring after I cleaned it up and straightened it out a little. It's Junque, of course, *sigh* Got my hopes up for nothing.. still though, whoever "K" is.. thank you for the excitement.
:
I found some other jewelery as well, a really big and really UGLY earring. <shrug>

...and something a little shocking , at least for me... a shell casing. *GULP* I dug up a spent rifle shell and it brought back to the forefront of my metal detecting fevered little brain that I wasn't in the nicest of neighborhoods. 7.62 X 39 .. not exactly a pop gun if you know what I mean. Whew! in the woodchips of a playground!?!?
Right after that startling find I found a broken heart.. or someone must have been after losing that little pendant anyway. It's one of those cutesy little two part pendants.. you know, a heartshape in two halves, one says "BEST" and the other says "FRIENDS" or something to that effect. Well, I found the "friends" half. I sure hope it had nothing to do with the spent rifle cartridge I'd just found! <shudder>
Things lightened up a bit after that, I found more and more clad, and lots of the usual tot lot flotsam.. you know, the plastic doodads (hair berets) or whatever they call them.. bows, ribbons, flowers, butterflies, they were everywhere. I guess the kids really "let their hair down" at those playgrounds. <giggle> but then there was another reminder of the militant nature of some of the locals.. a soldier..creeping up on me with his rifle at the ready! YIPES! And a big black spider! Oh and there was the dart! I thought I'd found a fifty cent piece.. glad I had my gloves on when I dug that little pricker up. *gasp* Oops.. did I say that?
A bit more clad and then it was back to reality again.. another rifle shell, spent, and of a smaller caliber.. but still a RIFLE SHELL!!! in a children's' playground!!!! SHEESH! A WW SUPER 22 HORNET.
Well I'd just about had enough excitement from this lot.. and I'd finished detecting it. <smirk> so I headed back to my ride and drove a block or so down the street to the other tot lot I'd mentioned.
I didn't find nearly as much at the second tot lot, but the finds were both similar, and very different. I found more plastic flotsam, more clad, even some more bling.. cheapy stuff.. and another heart pendant! ? ? Yeah, someone keeps losing their hearts around here I guess. Some buttons, a zipper pull, some shoelace bling (who invented that?) and one little pendant that had my heart racing for a moment. I thought I'd found some GOLD!!! It sure looks like gold, but then again it looks like a dime. An old dime (1929) by it's date, but it has a loop on top to make it a pendant. Quite possibly someone has taken a 1929 dime affixed a loop and dipped in in gold.. that's what it looks like anyway. It's probably NOT gold, but I kind of like it anyway. It would be WAY COOL if it was gold though. <smile>
[attach3]:
Some other not so usual finds in a tot lot would be the remains of a brass door knob, the face plate of a (copper?) or brass door lock, found over twenty feet away, the trigger from an old cap gun or some other toy gun, and one lone wheat penny.. (1953 D)

Those finds were found amongst the dirt and clay under the woodchips, with pieces of brick and glass and other debris from the remains of an old house, or houses that used to be on the location where the playground now stands. Had I not had the iron discriminated out I'd have gone deaf from all the targets I would have been getting. Perhaps another trip?
I found a Disney character (from "Cars") and some action figure's left arm, and this odd looking clown of a worm.. or worm clown or whatever the hell it is... ?? Oh and a coveted Chuck E Cheese token.

WOOHOO!!!! Another one for my growing collection! DING DING DING DING! RING RING RING RING>.... oops, that'd be my cell phone ringing.. my dearest wife, now home and wondering where the devil I'm at. And so ended my brief respite from work and weather and a much needed MD fix! OH BOY! Do I fell Better!!! It's like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. *sigh* I can't wait till warmer weather, and/or vacation! All towards which my finds (clad anyway) are earmarked. Sure is nice to have a hobby that can pay for vacations.. or at least contribute towards them anyway. <grin>
I LOVE THIS HOBBY!!!
Here's more pics of my finds for today, a fine collection if I might say so myself. Nearly ten dollars in clad coins... 161 coins! (counting the dime pendant and the Chuck E Cheese token)

Yessir! I fine collection indeed! <smiling> I hope All of you get to get out and feed the need to MD soon. I know I can't be the only one sufferring withdrawls due to the weather and work.
Here's to Happy Hunting to you ALL !
