Well, my little brother stole the show today, with the absolutely most perfect flying eagle cent I have ever seen. If it did not have a little bit of pitting, it would be AU or EF. 1858 small letters. I got a really nice horse bit that is early 1800's, hand forged. It was found where there had been a late 1700's early 1800's barn. Rick picked up a really nice Foreign Legion watch fob there also. We got one short of a full horse worth of horseshoes also. Additional finds included a huge 50 cal cartridge and three bullets along with some other goodies.
To answer Peters question about what are the brothers hunts; Rick and I get together two to three times per year to detect for a full week. Occaisionally we will have a friend or two along for the fun.
Someone asked how we cleaned the iron objects. I will include a before and after picture of the horse bit. I first take and hammer the big rust off of the object. I then use a wire wheel to get most of the rust off, then into hot water with a brass brush. Next totally dried with a hair dryer and then three coats of Loctite, Extend rust neutralizer.
Thanks for looking, Tomorrow we are off to an island on a nearby lake looking for relics from an Indian who lived there in the late 1700's and helped the local settlers in the area....Lance and Rick
