I found this a couple years ago I know it's a buckle but I haven't been able to ID it. It's 2 inches long and 1.5 inches wide I thought maybe it was military but I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated
They are buckle covers that help prevent main and tail hair from catching on the harness buckles. Hard to say how old, as they have been in use continuously for 150 years or more. Nice find!

Yes, it is a horse-harness "buckle shield"" (strap-buckle cover), but no, that type has not been in use for 150 years (civil war era). It was invented and patented in 1892. Here's a scan of the original Patent diagram, with the inventor's name and date.

You are correct Cannonball! It's only been in use for 121 years!
