buckshot's lucky Okla find.....New pics!

I always wondered if either one of us would be fortunate enough to find to pieces of a broken point- Buckshot was! Check out the insitu. Perfect fit. That was incredible. And what a pretty point. Is it maybe a Decatur? I thought I was looking at a beveled edge on each side last night, but the light wasn't really good. And maybe the small base has the "specialty flaking" associated with this type? Buckshot is leaning towards Ensor, he is supposed to come along and add better pictures. Whatever it is, it's nice! I found another big wide point, and an interesting base, or broken point. There isn't a sharp edge on it, so it was either ground, or has just been around forever. It has a flute, or more likely a thinng flake?

Although some people would call it Pelican Lake, it's an Edgewood point (and a helluva nice one at that). Because of the controversy, it's been jokingly called the "Lake Edge" point sometimes.

Cool! It is indeed very rare to find both pieces of a broken point. Usually they are churned up in the ground by the farm implements. Killer serrations on that point!

Hey ng, That was a pretty good afternoon looking. I was truly amazed that we found the tip of that one. I had a great time and it was interesting area to look. The points cleaned up good. Now if i can just get that tip glued back on there....

Thanks, Neanderthal for the ID and info. Having never found an "edgewood" before, I'm curious about the intense serrations along the edges. Is this the norm for this point type or has it been "tricked out" for some more serious tasks? Thank you, Molly... and Yes! Adena_man, Those are some mean looking serrations.That point would be a sticker for sure.

That is really lucky finding the base end and the broken tip, that sure does not happen very often. If you are going put it back together. Try using something like Elmers glue first before you use anything like Epoxy or Super Glue.

I have never found the tip to a broken point, I have found tip's and bases but non of them ever match up. Congratulations !!!

They can. There are 3 different forms that seem to occur with frequency in the group. Serrated examples with small, corner notched bases are one of them. As stated, people almost always call them Pelican Lake when they find them on the Ark, but that is in error. The Pelican lake cluster (Harder, Ruby, etc) are a high plains type from further up north, well into Canada.

I'm not saying that they couldn't come down here, they could. In fact, trying to find the line where they diminish could prove to be challenging. Regardless, we know the Edgewood people not only lived here, but thrived and manufactured their points in great numbers. The Edgewood may have originated from down south, they are found and are named for examples in Texas. However, more of them are found up here. In fact, the illustrated examples in Perino's guides all came from Oklahoma and Arkansas.

I have personally found all three types of "Lake Edge(wood)" together in Mayes County, OK. The third type is the rare one, it is more side-notched. I have a cache of the latter variety that I found and will take a pic of them sometime if I can remember. At that particular area of the site, pretty much only Edgewood points are found.

I have to point out that there is also an unnamed late Woodland point that is found in Northern Oklahoma and looks very similar. It's a well-made triangular corner notched point and is found in association with terminal Hopewell artifacts. They too are very thin and damned well made and are almost impossible to distinguish unless found in a datable context. They differ in that they are never serrated and they often are more broad in girth.

Thanks, TnMountains. It was a first for me. Actually, ng noticed the tip before i did. I was still standing up looking at the point and as she was going to get a close insitu pic, she saw the tip. I couldnt believe it!
