Hey folks, been lurking in the shadows as of late, haven't been able to post anything lately, heck I haven't even been able to get out..it's that time of year - I work in industrial heat and we're gearing up making sure our machinery is ready for winter, which requires a lot of travel. However, I was able to get out today, and I stopped by an old permission that produced very little last year-some wheaties and a 1939 Washington quarter. Today started out slow, digging a bunch of small metal tags with very fine wire on them, a couple trashed Zincolns, and then I got a jumpy signal, jumpy but high, flashing from 75 to 85. 7 inches later I pulled this copper, it appears to be a Draped Bust LC, which is my first Draped Bust coin. The obverse is surprisingly nice, the reverse not so much. I'm not a huge expert on old copper, and I haven't got a date yet as I haven't cleaned it yet. I will try to clean it with a toothpick, are there any other ways to bring out the obverse and the date without degradating it further? Other old coppers ive found were toasty and did not respond well to soaking in olive oil. This old girl has some nice green patina which surprised me. I apologize for sideways pics. Any additional feedback would be appreciated, thx for looking. Ddf

Super nice find !! Congrats !! Maybe you will date it somehow..GL...

Awesome save! Weird, usually the reverse is in good shape. Looks like A LOT of dirt still on her so I'm sure there is some detail there.

Wow, that is a unique coin find. Congrats!

Soak in distilled water changing the water daily. When you change water use toothpick to very gently loosen top layer of dirt. Repeat for as long as necessary. Can take up to a week or more sometimes

BOY THEM OLE GIRLS ARE POPPING UP LEFT AND RIGHT HERE LATELY ON TNET.

With the detail that's showing I don't think you'll have any problem getting a date off the copper. Good luck on the method that you choose for cleaning it up, will watching for the results. Nice catch!

Congrats on your first Draped Bust coin- looks like there's some pretty good obverse detail hiding there- GL!

Thx everybody for the kind words and helpful hints, when I dug it, I sent a pic off to my old hunting buddy in Texas, and we both initially thought it was Flowing Hair, I almost passed out. A quick initial cleaning revealed the Draped Bust, I'm just so very glad that the obverse is as nice as it is. This was a permission that's been hit by others before...so it just goes to show, NO place is hunted out...Ddf

Congrats on your first draped bust! I still havnt found a dB lc with a date. I'm guessing yours is a 1801. Lol. Looks like it will come out nice when done cleaning.

Collector, I think you're spot on...while I haven't had the time to clean it properly, a few peeks through my loupe does hint at an 01...SSSSSOOooooo close to my first 1700's coin...but is now my oldest coin to date. Ddf

That DBLC should clean up nicely. Great find

Wow...1796-1807 for a draped bust? That is one sweet early coin (for us in [emoji631]). I played with your image but still can't get date. Will it show when rubbing tinfoil over it?ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1506340556.244371.jpg

Congratulations on your first Draped Bust.
I agree
You should be able to get a date with that pretty lady.
