Button, Button, Who's Got The Button?

Hi all. I’m a newbie here from Schoharie County, NY… just wanted to say hello. I have visited this site on several occasions to read through the threads and am impressed with the knowledge base that is present. I am new to metal detecting, but have been digging in with gusto. Always a treasure hunter, I’ve put a lot of time into quartz mining (close to Herkimer Diamond country), prehistoric stone tools, fossils, concretions of several types locally, miscellaneous minerals, etc. Now, metal detecting has given me a new interest in historic artifacts… my area being settled in the early 1700’s, there is plenty to be found. As I am new to this, of course I have many questions about the things I find. This is why I am here. So, without further ado, the first item I have for your consideration is a button about which I have been able to find no information at all. It seems to be brass, is of the one piece convex type, was apparently gilded at one time and is approximately 20mm in diameter… any button experts out there?

RICH [???] COLOUR is a British Quality Mark (Backmark) used in the early 1800s, to show its depth of gold gilt. Civvy style button.

Welcome to Tnet.

Thanks, Crusader. Sorry, I should have posted before, it says 'RICH GOLD COLOUR' on the back. So, you think civilian button? I thought it had a martial look to it, but I'm surely no expert.

Stars are a very common motif on buttons during this golden age of buttons.

PS. Cru'Dad & I dig about 2000 buttons a year, so seen a few stars......lol

That's a SWEET lookin button!!!! CONGRATZ.

Welcome to Treasurenet, can't wait to find out more about that pretty button.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Over the next few days, I'll likely be benched due to awful weather (although I'll still try to get out), so I will put some time into a few more posts of finds from this site.
