Found today. Very fragile . Since I rarely find buttons , any idea? IMG_2204.webp

I think it might be a Confederate Cavalry button ....does it have a back mark ?
Your button C is facing up .

Backmarks will be on the CSC215 "TREBLE RICH / STANDARD"
The CSC218 will be ".WM BIRD&CO/LONDON"
Maybe you can pick out a couple of letters ?

The Calvary button still eludes me. That's a great find! Anything Confederate, in any condition is a great save. Congratulations!
Go back and check, may be more.

Yo Tigerdude SWEET! Find esp, in a small area with the 54, round Balls.
Will make a nice display indeed.

I should have a better office (don't have my button book in front of me) you got a Script C , or a Manuscript C.
Think Script. ???
But
I'd take either, & in any shape , you has nice dug condition , I don't see any pushes in the Face , just some rim flaking.

"I" would not try to clean it much more as you said it's fragile, does it have a Tin -Back or Iron possibly?
Is there a shank?
Not sure if there was a Local 'Tin-back' of this size / type button.
Always possible.

That's a banner find in my book & pretty rare these days 150+ years later.

I'm one to ask for pictures , lol
but Could you post a pic, of the Back side.

Either way ...awesome, Western Theater too.

Here is the backside. I posted some other things I found just a few feet further. Two enfields, IMG_2209.webp roundballs and looks like two swordhangers

Since Davers and probably you are interested in what your button's back can tell us about its specific identity... your photo shows it has the classic civil war era British-made "tire" loop (meaning, very nearly a perfect circle sitting on the button's back). The majority of the Confederate-imported Old English Script letter buttons were made by Smith, Kemp, & Wright of Birmingham England.

IMG_2214.webpI have a friend who has considerably more knowledge about this than meet. He thinks it might be a confederate "E" engineers button. Check out the 3 photos. IMG_2211.webpIMG_2213.webp

Thanks for the info.

Kinda like my blank 'brass' back Script 'I' that I found months ago ( but missing it's shank).

Do you think he may have an Engineers Button? It looks close.

They are very similar , but different (could be the Casting?) the (what I'm calling the new Moon crest on the left ,comes up further on the 'E' & the (Half Moon) atop the letter is a bit deeper on the 'C' as is on your button , do you think the 'mark' coming off the 'line' that would make it an 'E' is def, part of the design or just damage ? Even caused when the button was made?

Either way you win lol. I would think the 'E' is rarer than the 'C' tho I'm not positive.

It is an E (Confederate Engineer), and it is MUCH rarer than the C version. Congratulations. Banner find. :)
