Well..

Could be a button from 1904 uniform. If so, you can't be really sure because they pretty much don't exist other than a couple paintings.

It appears to me that there is also smaller letters to the right, and possibly elsewhere... But I often see imaginary stuff.

hmmm definitely entangled letters but maybe some cleaning will be in order. Its this type of lettering but I cant quite distinguish them. I couldnt find a match on the Waterbury site but it may be there.

It looks to me like an N over a maltese cross. I was thining maybe fire department or something?
