Button ID Needed Eagle Facing Left on Back

Found this button yesterday at a site where we have frequented. Only mark on back is an Eagle facing left. There is a design on the front but have to clean it up to see what it is. It almost looks like another eagle on the front, just like the one on the back. Front scan has alot of patina on it so don't quote me on this as of yet. What would be the best way to clean the front of this button? I'm hoping you guys can determine what might be on the front by the mark on the back. Thanks Hogge

I may be wrong, and I can't see the back of the button clearly, but my understanding is those flat buttons with eagle motifs on the back are common. The eagle motif was extremely popular throughout the late 1700s until the early 1900s on civilian items, political and governmental department items, including buttons. The face is most likely plain.

I think your button could date from the later 1700s through maybe the early/mid 1800s.

Nice period button... It would look great cleaned and displayed.

Jim is 100% correct. These buttons are civilian items.
