Great find, Earthworks! It's an early 1800's U.S. Navy button. Backmark is "LEWIS & TOMES." Button makers Edward Lewis and Francis Tomes were active in New York as early as 1819, and in Birmingham, England at least three years prior to that.

Looks like a NA67 in Albert's book, and appears a general date range of 1816-1833, but more likely 1819-1826. Tice has that particular backmark as 1820's.

Nice military button to find.

I agree— NA 67. The sort of "boat-like" field beneath the eagle is perhaps the best diagnostic feature in this attribution. The eagle's wing tip well between two stars on the left side is another.
