Tag : " D. P. W 864 " Found very close to civil war camp monument.

I wish this was related to the civil war. I did see someone post a similar tag on here that they said they found with other civil war relics. Could it be? I can't be that lucky. I suppose this is probably just a luggage tag or something. What do you all think?

For post with similar tag, see post below "Are these Civil War relics" by TNT2000.

Re: Tag : " D. P. W 864 " Found very close to civil war camp monument.

Hey, Ian—

My guess is that it's a postwar tool check or work check, although it could also be a claim check.

A tool check is handed in when a worker receives company-owned equipment in order to perform an assigned task. The tag is later reclaimed when the tools or other items are returned. This allows the company to keep track of its property and determine who is responsible for lost or damaged items.

A work check is handed in to a company clerk at the beginning of a shift or assignment, and then reclaimed when the shift ends or the job is done. Miners also use tags of this sort on ore cars, so that the proper individual or crew is credited for the load.

A claim check is given to someone who hands over personal property for temporary storage: baggage, parcels, hats & coats, clothing at gyms and pools, etc. The tag is presented to reclaim the item(s).

Without knowing what the initials represent, there is really no easy way to determine how the tag was used.

I would think so. I think the tag was on a ring, or s hook, and the ring or hook was attached to the handle of a valve. The number corresponds with which valve it came from.

It's amazing how you guys can narrow this down. The reason i originally got excited was b/c I saw another guy post a similar one that he found along with some civil war relics. Well, just so happens I found this on a river bank 500 feet from a monument that marks a civil war camp - but also I now find out - it is about 500 feet from Saginaw Water treatment facility. So it is certianly a tag from a water main.
