A couple buttons for the experts. Both are unique finds for me. The larger one has a some kind of design on the front and what appears to be a mold seam on the back. Neato! The smaller one appears like it could be pewter, but it has some weight to it like lead. Perhaps a lead shank? Heck, I dunno. Any ideas on the age?

Thanks a bunch.

The larger one is certainly 1700s. The smaller one very well could be--either pewter or homemade lead. It is odd, due to the shank on it (traces of a brass collar?).

Good finds! Check out my How To Clean Buttons thread in the "Cleaning and Preservation" section of the forum.

The large one is a little unusual. The front, kind of shouts late 1700s, however the seam is bothering me. I don't know of any 18th century buttons of this metal that had a seam. (plenty of 18th C pewter ones did) The seams for this metal type were in the early 1800s, which is where I would place them both.
