Roughly 5" - 6" deep but signs that the soil had been moved around. Not sure of the type of design. Original home site on an 1870 map but torn down by turn of century. 2nd home site built thereafter and is now gone. Dirt moved around during demolition I suppose. Found an 1867 Shield w. rays only 2" deep. Tried researching myself (again...not an expert) and going by the construction and shank, i would say sometime in the 1800's. Button is very thin and light, picture doesn't show very well at all but the back has gold gilding. JR
