Button with nail through eye!

Any chance anyone know how old this button is? It has a nail through the eye. Think it was intentional. Nail has so much rust on either end that it wont come out of the eye of the button.

Is there a backmark on that button?

I'm thinking intentional Noticed that it fell off the uniform and used a Nail to keep it in place until he could Sew it back on HH Chug rust will increase the size of the Nail

Some of these Great Seal buttons without backmarks were manufactured to be used as replacements for US Army veteran re-unions. Its very possible that a nail was used to hold the new shiny replacement button(s) on the uniform.
