CW era, or not - that snake buckle is a cool find! Thanks for sharing.

Nice find. I am in Victoria, Australia and we call them Gold fields buckles because they are found on the gold fields, 1850s - 1870s. This is the Era that I search and below are a few of my finds. Two snake buckles and two American buckles. All found on the same gold field and in the same area of each other. So found on an 1850s - 1870s gold field gives a good indication of the age of my buckles, and yours. Again, a very nice find.

Cheers, Woolshed

Thanks for your valuable input which adds evidence to the debate.
I wish the books had a better timeline of styles verses time period. But your point that because yours date to that period, so does the OP, over simplifies the ID. Like I started with, in the UK, they date for many hundreds of years, not just a short 19th C period.
It would be good to see further study on exact types & uses/timeline.
They are still being used today.

My most reason link, is an exact match to the OPs, still on the original belt from WWI era, so that's fairly strong evidence I think. But only for that type.

Yes, I agree with you on that. The Victorian Police had them in the 1880s and the Australian troops used them in WW1. As you say, they go back a long way. It would make great research and good book.
Cheers, Mick.

In the UK they started in the 3rd Quarter of the 16th C about 1575, fell out of favour sometime in the 17th C & reappeared in the beginning of the 19th C & then had continuous use until today.
So yes, plenty of material for a book.

I found one in 2013, but is a slightly different version than yours (OP) yours has 2 heads, mine has a head, and a tail.

Haven't checked the link that Don provided, but I will now. Hope I learn something.

This snake type I believe is 20th C, probably later than WWI. Closer to types used 20-30 years ago on Sailor uniforms.
