I posted some finds yesterday from a site I have been searching for many years. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,117008.msg857456.html#msg857456 As I said in the post, I only had an hour to detect. I have, however, been more methodical in my detecting, and it appears to be paying off. I have gridded off the site (which has a history dating back to the 1680's). I have also been digging EVERY signal. I was sure this one was a beer or soda can, and I may have even ignored it on previous hunts.

I left the tin in my car overnight thinking I had found a can of shoe polish or Skoals. Luckily I looked a little more closely today and realized it was a ladies compact. When I opened it all I saw was the broken glass and powder/sand at first, but then I realized It is filled with 11 wheat cents ranging from 1914 to 1926!!! They smell purdy too!

I always double check the trash finds before discarding them, and once again I am glad I did!! No doubt I will be returning again. I only worked a very small fraction of the site; it might take months to work it all! I am convinced that if I missed this, there must be even better finds!

Now that is cool! Dig it all! I thought I had just another piece of metal slag the other day and it turned out to be a pendent of some kind. As you said always take a second look at your trash. ;) Great find.

GREAT HUNT .....PACO

Those pennies should be in pretty nice shape! Not a 14D is it?

Very cool,,, Congrats!
I'm with you,,, I know I'm going to start dig'n a few other signals than what I normally dig, although I dig all sorts of weird signals as it is,, some have paid off big time,, and others are simply trash, but ya never know until ya dig...

I just pulled a silver ring out the other day that I could of swore was a bottle cap... ;D
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

I rinsed them all off & cleaned out the tin before I posted it. Soaked the 1926 in peroxide. It has some corrosion on the obverse, but the detail on the reverse tells me this penny was new when it was placed in the compact.

No Denvers in this lot. All Philly. It is unusual to find a mintmark on any pre WWII coins in this region.

Awesome find. I've checked in so many containers over the years hoping to find a little cache, but so far I haven't had any luck. Congrats on finally getting a little something extra in an old compact.
